Among the most cynical aspects of the entire badger slaughter proposal is the declaration by Defra that it does not intend to test the badgers it orders killed to see if they do indeed have TB. Such testing, it states, would be too expensive and would not, in any case, provide enough useful information.

Since 1975, more than 30,000 badgers have been killed in an attempt to curb TB in cattle. Tests revealed that 80% of the slaughtered animals were free of TB . And despite virtually exterminating badgers from four counties in the republic of Ireland, a massive TB problem remains in each of those areas.

A very good overview of the Bovine TB situation can be found at animalaid.org It seems that the powers that be are more concerned in keeping British farmers happy than addressing the real problem

 More & more badgers are making homes within urban areas – this stands to reason as more & more of meles/brocks ideal habitat disappears . Nevertheless , left to their own devices it seems there is no place they cant occupy .

I have just moved to the Birkby area of Huddersfield & was overjoyed at catching a glimpse of something large & stripey foraging beneath the bushes behind our gaff . On close inspection in just about any part of Birkby, there is evidence of Badgers .

somebody has filled this in , whether children or adults – I feel a responsibility to make my community aware of the needs of badgers & the rights they have in law . It is an offence to intefere with a badger sett . So far I have found 6 holes deliberately filled – 4 with recent digging as I think the former occupants want to move back in .

Bluebellls I have never seen so many in all my life . On a most precarious steep muddy banking , hiden beneath a mass of holly was a huge badger sett , which sprawled along the valley . I counted the first 20 holes but soon forgot where I was up to in light of the struggle to remain upright . The indications suggest this must be one huge family of brocks . I have recently read & re-read Ernest Neal’s absolutely fantastic book on Badgers – this is surely the badger bible . Reading this book has helped to set(t) me free from concerns , that some of my own behaviour is intrusive to the badger world . Because so many of the setts I have found are so near to some busy urban areas , complete with children who upon finding a newly appeared hole , proceed to tear a limb from the nearest tree & poke around . A firmly wedged bough , is as likely as anything to prevent adult badgers from using a sett entrance .

I cant get the thought of badger funerals from my head . A few weeks ago I saw a dying badger bury itself – that was quite a moving experience for me . I just really wonder if maybe, the stories of large family groups taking a fallen badger to a specially prepared hole can be real . I really would like to think so – it makes the brocks more than human & I just cant imagine what a mass badger genocide would achieve . Except making this beautiful mammal even more rarely  seen .

I have located a badger sett on a small bit of waste ground in the centre of Huddersfield . I understand there are plans to build on the land . There are cubs & judging by the earthworks probably several (4?) adults . This is the smallest territory I have surveyed yet as there is precious little but some of the busiest roads in what I understand to be the largest town in Europe .

We call ourselves a nation of animal lovers – yet some of the things people do to animals are simply beyond any suitable words I know of . Please if everybody reading this were able to convey the sentiment to just one other person a day – it would make a difference . The public need to be made aware of the plight of our brocks – not just the culling , but the alarming & growing trade in the export of badgers to Ireland – where the persecution has led to near extinction . 

The police are indifferent to crimes against badgers & officially see the law as a “non priority” I have seen this myself at first hand  . Despite all the evidence of badger crime – there are very few convictions . Most of the punishments consist of fines – usually not more than 400GBP . That is no detterent at all when live badgers exchange hands for 500GBP each for use in viciously cruel badger baiting events .

Am I being over-sensitive or delusional in thinking the fate of our oldest & most loved mammal is in the balance – I think not . There are surely more of you against animal cruelty than in favour of it – SURELY . A number of campaigns are underway to highlight what most of you must be thinking . It is my most sincere hope that our nation of animal loveras wake up to the realities of badger persecution . Thanks for reading , thanks for visiting – but please dont ignore my humble words . One team would enter down a stairway from the roof, lowering a large explosive device down through the skylight to cover their entry and cause maximum confusion
Another team would blow in the first floor windows at the front of the embassy and enter via the balcony

The Huddersfield Narrow Canal connects Ashton-under-Lyne and Huddersfield. It was built at first by the engineer Benjamin Outram. He resigned in 1801 and was succeeded by Thomas Telford. It took ten more year until the canal and the tunnel were opened. All in all it took 16 years to build the tunnel.

The tunnel was an importantant infrastructure, used for the transport of goods across Yorkshire for many decades. But with the 20th century the decline of the small boats came, and the canal was finally abandoned. It was not big enough for the modern ships and thus avoided. Tom Rolt and Robert Aickman, founders of the Inland Waterways Association, took a boat along the Canal in 1948. It is said, that this was the last boat through the tunnel for 50 years. The Huddersfield Canal Society was founded 26 years later, but it took another 27 years until the canal was reopened.

There are regular passages through the tunnel, and there is usually space for individual visitors. It is also possible for boat owners to cross the tunnel with their own boat. It has to fit the tunnel, and it must be towed through by electric tug, while the boat crews ride through the tunnel in the accompanying passenger module.

From Tunnel End Cottages at the tunnel mouth boat rides go about 500m into the tunnel. The boats are specially designed with glass roof and powerful external lights. At each end is a viewing platforms. Standedge Visitor Centre has an exhibition on the history of the canal and the building of the Tunnel.

In the age of “Canal Mania” the desire for profit sometimes pushed the bounds of what was technically feasible at that time. A proposal by a rival to the Rochdale Canal Company for a four-mile tunnel between Littleborough and Ripponden never got beyond the drawing board. Standedge Tunnel was so ambitious that it nearly led to the downfall of the whole canal scheme.

The construction of the tunnel was beset by many problems, many of these being due to poor organisation. The excavation of the tunnel began at both ends but after a while it was realised that the Diggle end was being constructed several feet higher than the Marsden end.

In correcting this, previous work was undermined, causing several collapses. There was also a persistent problem of large quantities of water seeping into the workings and in one year only 150 yards of tunnel was excavated.

The canal’s engineer, Benjamin Outram, had many other commitments so that most of the canal construction had taken place under the supervision of a young, inexperienced surveyor, Nicholas Brown. Some of the construction work elsewhere on the canal was inadequate and was washed away by floods in 1799. This and the tunnel’s poor progress almost caused the project to be abandoned.

More capital was raised and repairs carried out, but the company desperately needed the revenue from carrying goods, so a system was set up of transporting cargo by horse between Marsden and Dobcross on the two completed sections of canal.

Following Outram’s resignation, the well known engineer Thomas Telford was called in to advise on the tunnel’s completion.

Excavation had been taking place, not only from each end, but also from the bottom of the air shafts. (The spoil was hoisted up the shafts and dumped nearby, where it can still be seen.) This led to the tunnel being somewhat crooked and Telford discovered that, at one point, the two excavations were not going to meet and that if they were not careful they were going to end up with two tunnels! Correcting this has resulted in the tunnel having noticeable bends!

The tunnel was eventually opened in 1811 and the canal became a through route 17 years after work began. The first boat through Standedge Tunnel, “Lively Lady” emerged to the sound of church bells and a band playing “Rule Britannia”.

Using the tunnel wasn’t an easy option for the boatmen, however. To keep costs down, the canal was built without a towpath. While the horses were led over the hill, the boatmen had to “leg” the boat through the tunnel, by lying on boards across the front of the boat and walking along the walls or roof of the tunnel, which took up to four hours.

The tunnel was only wide enough for one boat. There were several passing places big enough for single boats to pass, but as the traffic increased and with time meaning money for the boat crews, there were frequent fights as crews refused to back off.

The Canal Company decided that boats could only be propelled through the tunnel by its own official “leggers,” and to operate a traffic control system. This involved only westbound traffic using the tunnel for a four hour period, then only eastbound during the next four hours. The tunnel thus became a bottleneck with boats having to queue to use the locks. The leggers were accommodated in Tunnel End Cottages and were paid a shilling a trip.

It took a long time for the canal’s backers to to recover their investment and make any profit. After a short period of relative prosperity, the canal and tunnel were bought by the Huddersfield and Manchester Railway Company, whose line was to follow a similar route to the canal.

The railway company wanted to use the canal to remove spoil from the excavations for their own tunnel, which ran alongside the canal tunnel. They did this by boring short connecting passages so that boats could be loaded with spoil.

With the railways taking traffic away from the canals, the Huddersfield Canal fell into slow decline. The last commercial boat passed through the tunnel in 1921. It was officially closed in 1944 although a boat, “Ailsa Craig”, struggled through in 1948 before the lock gates on the canal were removed in the 1950s.

The tunnel had not been maintained and parts of the roof were unstable and some sections collapsed. By the time funding became available to restore the tunnel, it had become a major operation, with some sections needing to be stabilised with rock bolts and others to be lined with concrete. 10,000 tons of silt and 3,000 tons of fallen rocks had to be removed. On May 1st, 2001 the tunnel was open to boats once more, after restoration costing more than five million pounds. When the tunnel was originally opened in 1811,the cost of construction had been £123,804!

Canadian Richard Hannay (Robert Donat) is at a London music hall theatre, watching a demonstration of the superlative powers of recall of “Mr. Memory” (Wylie Watson) when shots are fired. In the ensuing panic, he finds himself holding a frightened Annabella Smith (Lucie Mannheim), who talks him into taking her back to his flat. There, she tells him that she is a spy, being chased by assassins. She claims to have uncovered a plot to steal vital British military secrets, implemented by a man with the top joint missing from one of his fingers. She mentions the “thirty-nine steps”, but does not explain its meaning.

That night, Smith is fatally stabbed with Hannay’s bread knife, but manages to warn him to flee. He sneaks out of the watched flat disguised as a milkman and takes a train to Scotland, where she had told him she was going to visit a man. He sees the police searching the train and learns from a newspaper that he is the target of a nationwide manhunt as a murder suspect. In desperation, he enters a compartment and kisses the sole occupant, the attractive Pamela (Carroll), in an attempt to escape detection. She however frees herself from his unwanted embrace and alerts the policemen. Hannay jumps from the train onto the Forth Rail Bridge and escapes.

He stays the night with a poor crofter (farmer) (John Laurie) and his young wife (Peggy Ashcroft), who flirts with Hannay. The next morning, he leaves in the farmer’s Sunday coat, and calls at the house the woman had told him of. There he tells his story to the seemingly respectable Professor Jordan (Godfrey Tearle), who then reveals that he is missing part of a finger. Jordan shoots Hannay and leaves him for dead, but luckily, the bullet is stopped by the farmer’s hymnbook, left in a coat pocket.

Hannay goes to the local police, but they refuse to believe his story, since they know Jordan well. Hannay jumps through a window and escapes into the crowd. He tries to hide himself in a political meeting, but is mistaken for the introductory speaker; he gives a rousing impromptu speech (without knowing a thing about the candidate he is introducing), but is recognised by Pamela, who gives him up once more. He is handcuffed and taken away by “policemen”. Hannay eventually realises they are agents of the conspiracy when they bypass the nearest police station. When the car is stopped by a flock of sheep blocking the road, one of the henchmen handcuffs him to Pamela, but he escapes, dragging an unwilling Pamela along.

They travel across the countryside and stay the night at an inn, the girl still not believing Hannay’s story. While he sleeps, she manages to slip out of the handcuffs, but then eavesdrops on one of the fake policemen on the telephone downstairs; the conversation confirms Hannay’s assertions.

She returns to the room and sleeps on a sofa. Next morning, she tells him what she heard, and is sent to London to pass it on to the police. No secrets have been reported missing however, so they do not believe her. Instead, they follow her to get to Hannay.

She leads them to Mr. Memory’s show at the London Palladium. When the performer is introduced, Hannay recognises his theme music – it’s the annoyingly catchy tune he hasn’t been able to forget for days. Hannay puts two and two together and realises that the spies are using Mr. Memory to smuggle the secrets out: he has them memorised. As the police take him into custody, he shouts out a question: “What are the 39 Steps?” Mr. Memory compulsively begins to answer, “The Thirty-Nine Steps is an organisation of spies, collecting information on behalf of the foreign office of ….” Jordan shoots him and tries to flee, but is apprehended. The dying Mr. Memory recites the information stored in his brain, a design for a silent aircraft engine.

Major improvements in yahoo search , which I specifically targetted as a priority finds us at 14th of 

over 7 million entries for “Robin Hood” & second  for “Robin Hoods Grave” my original key phrase

none of this happenned by accident , it was all through determined patient SEO . Who knows

where it will lead ?? one things sure though – I wont be competing with the BBC on Google – thats

cos they buy their privelaged standing & of course employ the best programmers out there .

I concede that theres a few Robin Hood sites that are absolutely phenomenal & I have no plans or

expectations to eclipse , but the internet is something of a dog eat dog thing & I make no apology

for my aspirations . there are also some real turkeys that figure prominently above me on Google

they neither have any real content or functionality but most likely their long standing keeps them up

as it is always kept fresh as Im a big time video uploader. I make many (thousands) of videos &

Rudel flew 2,530 combat missions and successfully attacked many tanks, trains, ships, and other ground targets, claiming a total of 2,000 targets destroyed – including 800 vehicles, 519 tanks, 150 artillery guns, a destroyer, two cruisers, one Soviet battleship and nine aircraft which he shot down The Junkers Ju 87 or Stuka (from Sturzkampfflugzeug, "dive bomber") was a two-seat (pilot and rear gunner) German ground-attack aircraft of World War II. Designed by Hermann Pohlmann, the Stuka first flew in 1935 and made its combat début in 1936 as part of the Luftwaffe’s Condor Legion during the Spanish Civil War. The aircraft was easily recognizable by its inverted gull wings, fixed spatted undercarriage and its infamous Jericho-Trompete ("Jericho Trumpet") wailing siren, becoming the propaganda symbol of German air power and the Blitzkrieg victories of 1939-1942. The Stuka’s design included several innovative features, including automatic pull-up dive brakes under both wings to ensure that the plane recovered from its attack dive even if the pilot blacked out from the high acceleration. Although sturdy, accurate, and very effective, the Ju 87 was vulnerable to modern fighter aircraft, like many other dive-bombers of the war. Its poor manoeuvrability, speed and defensive armament caused the Stuka to require heavy protection from German fighters. The Ju 87’s flaws became apparent as early as the Battle of Britain, when it was withdrawn from service after unacceptable and unsustainable losses. The Stuka operated with further success after the Battle of Britain, and its potency as a precision ground attack aircraft became valuable to the German war effort in the Balkans Campaign, the African and Mediterranean Theatres and the early stages of the Eastern Front campaigns where Allied fighter resistance was disorganised and in short supply. However, once the Luftwaffe had lost air superiority on all fronts the Ju 87 once again became easy targets for enemy fighter aircraft. In spite of this, and lacking a successor, the type continued to be produced until 1944. By the end of the conflict the Stuka was largely replaced by ground attack versions of the Focke-Wulf Fw 190, but some units, like Sturzkampfgeschwader 2 "Immelmann" operated the Ju 87 to the last day of the war. 5,752 Ju 87 of all versions were built between 1936 and August 1944.
