EMERGENCY HOTLINE - 07968400865 -

A recent attack on a badger sett in the Holme Valley – is the worst I have seen in all my years with the Kirklees-Badger-Protection-Group . The incident was carried out at the most heartless time – as the sows would be suckling month old cubs .The scene was horrific by any standards and sickened everybody who investigated the crime-scene . Small dogs with radio collars are shoved into the sett , where they confront the occupant . When the beeping signal stops moving , the badger is cornered & is quickly dug out with spades .
Using graspers ,or home made tools , the terrified badger is removed from its home . These sub-humans then decide how they want to kill the beautiful slinky mammal – often the badger is nailed by its tail to a tree & the terriers are set upon it . The carnage at this sett indicates an horrific bloody struggle the exact details impossible to tell & hard to imagine , there was so much blood over such a large area . The perpetrators of this like to film these shocking events to show their friends what fun they had – it then appears on youtube , where even more sick individuals seem to enjoy this Despicable torture – If this incident upsets you – you have two choices . Ignore it and hope it goes away – or do something .
HERES HOW YOU CAN HELP . its really easy
Tell us of any badgers you may have seen – (sometimes cats dogs , even hares get reported to us – but we will cheerfully follow up all reports .) If you see anything even slightly suspicious or out of the ordinary , in the park , the woods or maybe your own garden . The KBPG are committed to treat all information in confidence .
No matter how irrelevant it may seem – this could mean life or cruel death to a poor Badger ,

Our Aims

THE OBJECTIVES

  • To encourage the understanding and study of badgers.
  • To promote measures which will enhance their welfare.
  • To encourage tolerance, appreciation and respect for all wildlife and their habitat.

What We Do

HELP BADGERS

  • Badger diggers and baitors.
  • Road traffic accidents.
  • Loss of habitat caused by development.

  • In order to counteract some of these events Kirklees Badger Protection Group has built up a strong network of organisations and individuals who help and support us with our work. These include the Police and the RSPCA with whom we work in cases of suspected illegal activity, English Nature who give licences to work on or near a badger sett in order to protect it, and Kirklees Metropolitan Council with whome we have close links in connection with planning and forestry work.

We are members of the National Federation of Badger Groups, which represents us at national level and is a central organisation for information and research. We are also members of Yorkshire Wildlife Trust that helps to maintain our contacts with all aspects of conservation.

We have a good working relationship with landowners in the area. Local quarry owners have been appreciative of our advice and expertise.

Each sett is recorded and a monitor appointed. The monitor visits the sett regularly and records the findings. These records may be used by the police if there was a prosecution. There is much survey work to be done in the Kirklees area in order for the Group to record and monitor as many setts as possible.

We have a Rehabilitation Pen in order to house any injured badgers, although few animals survive a road traffic accident. Apart from these practical aspects of our work, we try to publicise the threats to the badger and inform the general public about the activities of the Group. In order to do this we attend local agricultural shows and other events during the Summer. This enables us to meet the public and gives us the opportunity to raise some much needed funds.

PROTECTION OF BADGERS AND THEIR SETTS

Unscrupulous men will take a badger by digging its sett and locating the badger underground by using a terrier with a radio collar on. The badger is then dug out and killed or taken to be baited. Others take badgers by LAMPING. The badger is caught in a strong beam of light and a large lurcher type dog is released to run it down. The badger cannot defend itself against such large dogs.

Our monitors are out at different hours of the day and night to keep check on these activities.
